چکیده
A series of prey items of a given weight were offered to a spider. They were obligatory removed 1 min after the beginning of the attack, and their state noted afterwards. Venom is injected in small as well as in large prey. The prey had 37 to 520 % of the spider weight. The mortality rate of the prey is negatively and linearly correlated with their weight. When a prey weighs about 30 mg or more, the spider (15 mg) injects almost all its venom in the first one of the successive prey items. With smaller prey, the venom glands are gradually emptied during the successive bites.

Spider Web DNA: A New Spin on Noninvasive Genetics of Predator and Prey
Noninvasive genetic sampling enables biomonitoring without the need to directly observe or disturb target organisms. This paper describes a novel and promising source of noninvasive spider and insect DNA from spider webs. Using black widow spiders (Latrodectus spp.) fed with house crickets (Acheta domesticus), we successfully extracted, amplified, and sequenced mitochondrial DNA from spider web...
متن کاملEffects of size, motility and paralysation time of prey on the quantity of venom injected by the hunting spider Cupiennius salei.
Previous experimental studies have shown that neotropical wandering spiders (Cupiennius salei) inject more venom when attacking larger crickets. It has been postulated that this is a consequence of predator-prey interactions during envenomation, which increase in intensity with the size of a given prey species. The present study was designed to test this hypothesis using anaesthetized crickets ...

15 Noninvasive genetic approaches enable biomonitoring without the need to directly observe or 16 disturb target organisms. Environmental DNA (eDNA) methods have recently extended this 17 approach by assaying genetic material within bulk environmental samples without a priori 18 knowledge about the presence of target biological material. This paper describes a novel and 19 promising source of n...
متن کاملIsolation, N-glycosylations and Function of a Hyaluronidase-Like Enzyme from the Venom of the Spider Cupiennius salei
STRUCTURE OF CUPIENNIUS SALEI VENOM HYALURONIDASE Hyaluronidases are important venom components acting as spreading factor of toxic compounds. In several studies this spreading effect was tested on vertebrate tissue. However, data about the spreading activity on invertebrates, the main prey organisms of spiders, are lacking. Here, a hyaluronidase-like enzyme was isolated from the venom of the s...
متن کاملHow Dietary Phosphorus Availability during Development Influences Condition and Life History Traits of the Cricket, Acheta domesticas
Phosphorus is extremely limited in the environment, often being 10-20 times lower in plants than what invertebrate herbivores require. This mismatch between resource availability and resource need can profoundly influence herbivore life history traits and fitness. This study investigated how dietary phosphorus availability influenced invertebrate growth, development time, consumption, condition...
